Helmet is an American alternative metal band that emerged from the New York City indie scene in 1989. Formed by vocalist and lead guitarist Page Hamilton, Helmet has been known for their crushing riffs, precise staccato rhythms, and rigorous, no-nonsense aesthetic. The band gained underground recognition with their debut album "Strap It On" in 1990, but it was their 1992 follow-up, "Meantime," that broke them into the mainstream, showcasing their signature blend of raw guitar sounds with rigorous sonic architecture.
Throughout the 1990s, Helmet influenced a wave of bands with their fusion of aggressive metal and hardcore punk elements, coupled with jazz-influenced drumming. Despite disbanding in 1998 after their album "Aftertaste," Helmet made a comeback in 2004, maintaining their unique sound and fervent base. In the ensuing years, they released several albums, including "Monochrome" (2006) and "Seeing Eye Dog" (2010). The band's most recent studio album, "Dead to the World" (2016), continued to feature Hamilton's penchant for complex guitar work, underpinned by Helmet's characteristic heavy yet melodic sensibility. Though the lineup has changed multiple times over the years, with Hamilton being the sole constant member, Helmet's dedication to their craft and impact on the alternative and metal music scenes remain undiminished.
