Grunge

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock characterized by its heavy, distorted guitar sound, driving rhythms, and often introspective, angst-filled lyrics. Emerging in the late 1980s in Seattle, grunge drew from punk, heavy metal, and indie rock influences, distinguished by its lo-fi production, flannel-clad aesthetic, and anti-glam, DIY ethos. The genre's popularity peaked in the early 1990s, with its raw, emotional intensity resonating with a generation disillusioned with mainstream culture. Grunge's fusion of heavy riffs, introspective songwriting, and powerful vocals revolutionized rock music, influencing subsequent genres like post-grunge and nu-metal. Its distinctive blend of sonic aggression and melodic sensibility set it apart from other alternative styles, making grunge a cultural touchstone of the 1990s.
