Skin Yard was a seminal grunge band that emerged from the vibrant music scene of Seattle, Washington in the mid-1980s. Formed in 1985 by guitarist Jack Endino and drummer Matt Cameron, who later joined Soundgarden and Pearl Jam, the band was known for its heavy, distorted sound that prefigured the emergence of grunge. Vocalist Ben McMillan and bassist Daniel House completed the lineup, bringing a raw energy that was captured in their self-titled debut album "Skin Yard" released in 1987. Over the years, Skin Yard went through several lineup changes but maintained their influence on the Pacific Northwest's music culture.
Throughout their active years, Skin Yard released a series of albums and singles that contributed to the foundation of the grunge movement that swept the nation in the early 1990s. "Hallowed Ground" (1988) showcased their evolving sound, while "Fist Sized Chunks" (1990) and "1000 Smiling Knuckles" (1991), added to their legacy with heavy riffs and introspective lyrics. Their final studio album, "Inside the Eye," came out in 1993 and featured the band's matured style. Meanwhile, "Start at the Top" is a compilation of singles and rare tracks that provide a broader look at Skin Yard's influence and breadth. Their live prowess was captured in the posthumously released "The Perfect Lawn (Live 1991 - 1985)," which serves as an electric retrospective of their raw power and dynamic performances. Despite their break-up in 1993, Skin Yard's impact on the grunge genre and the bands that followed has secured them a permanent place in the annals of Seattle's storied musical history.
