Sérgio Sampaio (1947–1994) was a Brazilian singer-songwriter whose music sits in that wonderfully off-kilter space between MPB, rock, samba, and blues. Often associated with the post-Tropicália wave and celebrated for his sharp, ironic lyrics, he built a reputation as a cult favorite—an artist’s artist who never sounded quite like anyone else.
He’s best remembered for the song “Eu Quero É Botar Meu Bloco na Rua,” which became his signature and helped cement his name in Brazil’s songwriting canon. Over the years, Sampaio’s work has been repeatedly rediscovered and reappraised, with fans drawn to his raw voice, unconventional melodies, and the way he could turn everyday frustrations into something poetic and strangely uplifting.
