Colourbox

Colourbox were a genre-blending British electronic duo formed in the early 1980s by brothers Martyn and Steve Young. Known for their ahead-of-the-curve experimentation, they mashed up dub, soul, post-punk, and early house music with DIY sampling tricks, creating a collage-like sound that felt like a rebellious art project. Signed to the iconic 4AD label, they dropped their self-titled debut LP in 1985 alongside a series of punchy 12" singles—from the cheeky "The Official Colourbox World Cup Theme" to their smoky cover of reggae classic "Baby I Love You So." Their most enduring legacy? Teaming with A.R. Kane as M/A/R/R/S to create the sample-crazy 1987 club bomb "Pump Up the Volume," a blueprint for the dance music explosion that followed. Though Colourbox disbanded shortly after, their cut-and-paste sonic adventures left fingerprints on everything from trip-hop to big beat.
