Aurèle Nicolet was a world-renowned Swiss flutist, widely regarded as one of the greatest classical flautists of the 20th century. Born in 1926, he gained early recognition for his extraordinary technique and beautiful tone, eventually becoming a principal flutist with the Berlin Philharmonic under Wilhelm Furtwängler. Nicolet was also a highly respected teacher, mentoring several generations of flutists at institutions such as the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and later through masterclasses around the world.
Nicolet's discography reflects his deep affinity for both baroque and modern repertoire, with notable recordings of Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, and contemporary composers like Toru Takemitsu and György Ligeti, many of whom wrote pieces specifically for him. His expressive playing and nuanced interpretations helped elevate the flute as a serious solo instrument in classical music. Even after officially retiring from performing, his influence continued through his students and recordings.
