Opera Prima Ensemble

Opera Prima Ensemble is a vibrant chamber group founded by renowned Italian viola da gamba virtuoso Cristiano Contadin. The ensemble is dedicated to exploring the Italian repertoire of the 17th century (the Seicento) with both technical mastery and lively enthusiasm. They have gained recognition for their historically informed performances, often collaborating with celebrated soloists such as soprano Amanda Forsythe. Their programs highlight evocative masterpieces by baroque composers including Monteverdi, Rossi, Merula, and Caccini, focusing on the passions and emotional depth of early Italian Baroque music.

Led by Contadin, Opera Prima features a flexible lineup of internationally acclaimed soloists and specializes in Renaissance and Baroque repertoire. The group performs both intimate quartet settings and larger formations, bringing fresh life to beloved and lesser-known works. Their recordings, including works by Handel and other Baroque composers, have attracted critical acclaim, celebrating the rich textures and expressive nuances of early Italian music.
