Georg Philipp Telemann

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767) was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist, widely regarded as one of the most prolific composers in history. Remarkably versatile, Telemann mastered several musical genres of his time, writing an astonishing number of works that included operas, oratorios, cantatas, concertos, chamber music, and instrumental suites. Despite being almost forgotten for a couple of centuries after his death, Telemann's music has seen a significant revival in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Born in Magdeburg, Telemann was primarily self-taught in music and showed prodigious talent from a young age. He excelled in various instruments and began composing as a child. Throughout his career, he held important positions, including Kapellmeister in Sorau and Eisenach, and music director of the five main churches in Hamburg. Telemann's vast oeuvre is known for its melodic inventiveness, cosmopolitan influences, and the adept use of contrapuntal techniques. His music, often characterised by its elegance and ease, reflected the transition from the Baroque period to the Classical era. Among his most recognised contributions are his overture-suites, sacred music, and chamber works, several of which are highlighted in recent releases that continue to showcase the breadth of his musical legacy.
