kandodo is a psychedelic rock project led by Simon Price, the British musician best known as the guitarist for the heavy psych band The Heads. The name kandodo is derived from a supermarket in Malawi that Price visited during his childhood in Africa, a nod to his formative experiences that subtly influence the ambiance of the music. Since its inception, kandodo has been characterized by its meditative and enveloping soundscapes that meld the boundaries between ambient music and space rock.
The project's self-titled debut album, 'kandodo,' was released in 2012 and received praise for its expansive sonic textures and hypnotic, loop-based compositions. This was followed in 2013 by 'k2o,' showcasing a further refinement of Price's ability to fuse melodic restraint with layers of atmospheric fuzz and drone. One of the most notable collaborations came with the album 'Lost Chants / Last Chance' in 2016, where kandodo joined forces with Robert Hampson of Loop, resulting in an immersive live recording split across two versions: electric and acoustic. Through these releases, kandodo has cemented its status in the niche of contemporary psychedelic explorations, appealing to those who seek a transportive listening experience.
With each project, kandodo seems to delve deeper into the mesmerizing power of repetition and the beauty of nuanced, slowly evolving musical motifs. Price's work under the kandodo moniker has consistently pushed the listener toward a state of trance-inducing contemplation, using minimalism and subtle progression to create a space for deep listening and introspection.
