Owiny Sigoma Band is a musical ensemble that emerged from a cross-cultural collaboration between London-based artists and Luo musicians from Kenya. Their story began in 2009 when the project's initiators, led by the UK-based record label Brownswood Recordings, traveled to Nairobi to explore a musical partnership that integrated the raw energy of East African rhythm traditions with Western songwriting and production techniques. Rooted in the Luo music traditions from Kenya and Tanzania, the band's name is a reflection of its members' lineage: 'Owiny' is the name of the group's Kenyan nyatiti player Joseph Nyamungu's grandfather, and 'Sigoma' is the village where he resides.
Owiny Sigoma Band's music is defined by its electrifying fusion of traditional Kenyan tunes and instruments with elements of funk, punk, and electronic music, creating a sound that is as contemporary as it is ancient. Their discography, which includes influential works such as "Nyanza," "The Lost Tapes," and singles like "(Nairobi) Too Hot" and "Changaa Attack," is characterized by a deep respect for Luo musical heritage while embarking on sonic explorations that defy genre boundaries. The band demonstrates a seamless blend of the nyatiti, an eight-stringed lyre, thundering traditional drums, and ambient electronics through their releases, captivating audiences globally with their pulsating live performances and the innovative, hypnotic grooves woven into each track.
