Ken McIntyre

Ken McIntyre, also known by his African name Makanda Ken McIntyre, was a highly respected multi-instrumentalist and composer who made a unique mark on the jazz world. Born in 1931, McIntyre was best known for his work on the alto saxophone, but he also played a wide array of woodwind instruments, including flute, bass clarinet, and oboe—pretty uncommon in jazz. His music blended avant-garde elements with deep-rooted African and Caribbean influences, resulting in a sound that was both adventurous and grounded in tradition.

Throughout his career, McIntyre recorded for labels like Prestige, United Artists, and SteepleChase. Albums like Looking Ahead, Year of the Iron Sheep, and Home show off his sophisticated compositions and forward-thinking approach. He also had a strong commitment to education, founding the Afro-American Music Program at the State University of New York (SUNY) College at Old Westbury. As both a performer and educator, McIntyre helped shape the landscape of modern jazz in lasting ways.
