Afro-cuban Jazz

Afro‑Cuban jazz is a vibrant fusion of jazz harmony and improvisation with the rhythmic engine of Cuban and Afro‑diasporic traditions. Built on clave (often 2‑3 or 3‑2), it layers congas, bongos, timbales, and cowbell with bass tumbao and piano montunos, creating grooves that can shift from danceable mambo and son to expansive, modern modal explorations. Horn sections deliver punchy riffs and syncopated hits while soloists stretch bebop lines, blues phrasing, and Latin melodic turns over polyrhythms that feel both tight and volcanic. The result is music that’s simultaneously sophisticated, percussive, and deeply communal.
