Jeffrey Runnings was a vocalist, bassist, and songwriter best known as the founder of the indie band For Against. Born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1963, Runnings formed For Against in 1984, initially playing keyboards. Over time, he transitioned to vocals and bass, solidifying the band as a trio with guitarist Harry Dingman III and drummer Gregory Hill. For Against's sound was heavily influenced by the UK post-punk scene, drawing comparisons to bands like Joy Division and the Durutti Column. The band released eight studio albums, with their debut *Echelons* arriving in 1987.
Outside of For Against, Runnings pursued solo projects. His solo album *Primitives and Smalls* was released in 2016, and he recorded a second solo album, *Piqued*, which was released posthumously in 2025 by Independent Project Records. Runnings was known for his distinctive voice and his passion for music, often sharing new discoveries with friends and fans. He passed away on March 3, 2025, after a battle with Stage 4 cancer, leaving behind a legacy in the post-punk and dream pop genres.
