Flanders Recorder Quartet

The Flanders Recorder Quartet, also often referred to as The Flanders Quartet, was an illustrious group renowned for their sublime interpretations and innovative performances of both early and contemporary music specially arranged for recorder ensembles. Established in 1987 in Belgium by four virtuosic players—Bart Spanhove, Paul Van Loey, Joris Van Goethem, and Tom Beets—the quartet swiftly made its mark on the international music scene, becoming a distinguished and defining feature within the realm of classical and early music.

Characterized by precision, creativity, and a collective passion for the warm, versatile sounds of recorders, the ensemble has brought an extensive range of music to audiences worldwide. Their repertoire spans several centuries, encompassing arrangements of Baroque masterpieces as well as newly commissioned works. The Six Wives of Henry the VIII and their arrangement of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons stand as testaments to their ability to bridge historical music with modern sensibilities, enthralling both purists and contemporary listeners alike. While their album, Recorder Quartet: Early Italian Recorder Music & English Consort Music, offers a deep dive into the quintessential sounds of early European compositions. Over a prolific career that lasted until their amicable disbandment in 2018, the quartet left behind a legacy of recordings and inspired musicianship, celebrated in such admired albums as Magic: Flanders Recorder Quartet and Friends, Armonia di Flauti, and Deutsche Barock Kammermusik VII, which capture the enchanting synergy between historical reverence and avant-grade interpretation that defined their unique artistry.
