Ultimate Painting was an indie rock duo from London, consisting of Jack Cooper (formerly of Mazes) and James Hoare (of Veronica Falls). Formed in 2013, the band was born out of a tour friendship and mutual admiration for each other's music, leading to collaboratively written songs that reflect their shared love for understated melodies and classic songcraft.
The band's self-titled debut album, "Ultimate Painting", released in 2014, introduced their knack for Velvet Underground-inflected harmonies and laid-back guitar-driven sound. They quickly followed up with "Green Lanes" in 2015, and then "Dusk" in 2016, which further solidified their reputation for crafting intimate, painterly songs that felt both warmly familiar and refreshingly original. Throughout their albums, tracks like "Song for Brian Jones", "Bills", and "(I've Got The) Sanctioned Blues" highlight Ultimate Painting's ability to wed infectious hooks with contemplative lyrics, a combination that won them a devoted fanbase. Their trajectory was an ascending one until their unexpected disbandment in early 2018, which led to the cancellation of the release of their fourth album, "Up!" Despite their relatively brief run, Ultimate Painting left a lasting impression on the indie scene with their meticulous attention to sonic detail and their celebration of the quieter moments in rock.
