Ivor Gurney was an English composer, poet, and war veteran. Born in 1890, he studied music at the Royal College of Music and became a close friend of the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. Gurney's music is often characterized by its haunting melodies and evocative harmonies, and he is considered one of the most important British composers of the early 20th century. During World War I, Gurney served as a stretcher-bearer and was eventually diagnosed with shell shock. His experiences during the war had a profound impact on his music and poetry, and he wrote some of his most moving works while recovering in a military hospital. Gurney died in 1937 at the age of 47, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful and deeply personal music.
