Steely & Clevie were a legendary Jamaican production and rhythm duo made up of drummer Cleveland "Clevie" Browne and keyboardist Wycliffe "Steely" Johnson. They played a pivotal role in shaping the modern sound of dancehall and reggae starting in the 1980s, blending traditional rhythms with cutting-edge digital production. Before teaming up, both musicians had extensive experience as session players—Clevie was part of the famed Studio One and Channel One studios, while Steely was known for his work with artists like Augustus Pablo.
Together, Steely & Clevie created a signature style that combined tight, computerized beats with infectious melodies, influencing countless producers and musicians. They were behind numerous hits for artists like Gregory Isaacs, Bounty Killer, and Shabba Ranks, and their riddims became staples in the dancehall scene. Sadly, Steely passed away in 2009, but their innovative legacy continues to inspire reggae and dancehall artists around the world.
