Afrika Mamas

Afrika Mamas is a renowned South African all-female a cappella group, formed in 1996 by Afrofolk singer Tu Nokwe, initially named Women Of Afrika. The group later took on the name Afrika Mamas under the leadership of Ntombi Lushaba in 1998. They have gained international recognition for their vibrant performances and albums, such as "Bayalibuza" and "Iphupho," which reflect a rich blend of traditional and modern South African music. Inspired by the legacy of Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Afrika Mamas have become ambassadors of South African music, touring extensively and educating audiences about African life through their music and storytelling. The group consists of talented vocalists who weave together powerful harmonies, from bass to soprano, making them a compelling force in global music.

Afrika Mamas have performed at prestigious events like the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the Essence Festival in New Orleans, cementing their status as musical ambassadors. Their music often highlights the challenges faced by women in contemporary South Africa, embodying themes of resilience and determination. With multiple nominations and accolades, Afrika Mamas have solidified their place as one of the most celebrated all-female groups in South African music, continuing in the footsteps of their musical heroes while forging a unique path forward.
