A cappella is vocal music performed without instrumental backing, using the human voice to carry melody, harmony, rhythm, and texture. Rooted in sacred choral traditions yet thriving in contemporary pop and collegiate scenes, it ranges from tight barbershop-style chords and doo-wop warmth to Scandinavian choral clarity, Balkan and Vietnamese ensemble blends, and the Adriatic klapa’s resonant, folk-leaning harmonies. Arrangements often feature bass lines, beatbox or vocal percussion, and careful vowel matching to create a full “band” sound, spotlighting both precise ensemble tuning and expressive solo leads.
