Franco & le T.P OK Jazz

Franco & le T.P OK Jazz was one of the most influential and beloved bands in African music history, led by the legendary Congolese guitarist and singer Franco Luambo Makiadi. Founded in the 1950s in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the group played a central role in the development and popularization of soukous (also known as Congolese rumba), blending Cuban rhythms with African musical traditions. Franco, revered for his expressive guitar work and powerful voice, led the band until his death in 1989, guiding it through decades of innovation and success.

T.P OK Jazz was more than just a band—it was a musical institution, known for its tight arrangements, socially conscious lyrics, and extended, danceable grooves. They released a huge catalog of music, with songs like “Mario” and "Cesar Aboya Yo" becoming classics not only in Central Africa but throughout the continent and beyond. Franco’s legacy lives on in the countless artists he inspired and the enduring popularity of his work.
