Spacemen 3

Spacemen 3 were an English alternative rock band, formed in 1982 in Rugby, Warwickshire by Peter Kember (also known as Sonic Boom) and Jason Pierce (who would later find fame as the leader of Spiritualized). Their music is known for its brand of minimalistic psychedelia, drawing heavily from the proto-punk drone of The Velvet Underground, blues, and gospel music, and characterized by its simplistic yet hypnotic use of repetition. They coined the term "minimalistic psychedelic" to describe their sound, which often focused on the space or ambiance between notes just as much as the notes themselves.

The band released several albums and singles that have since become cult classics, including "Sound of Confusion" (1986), "The Perfect Prescription" (1987), and "Playing with Fire" (1988). Though commercially they remained relatively obscure, their influence on the development of the shoegaze and neo-psychedelia genres is widely acknowledged. Spacemen 3 are often cited for their mantra-like use of guitar effects, electronic drones and philosophical lyrics, concisely captured in their maxim "Taking drugs to make music to take drugs to." The group disbanded in 1991 after the release of "Recurring," their final studio album. Their posthumous releases, including live recordings and remastered classics, continue to contribute to their legacy as pioneers of the space rock genre and cement their status as cult heroes in the alternative music scene.
