Jesu is the brainchild of British musician Justin Broadrick, who founded the project following the dissolution of his influential industrial band Godflesh. Emerged as a solo venture in 2003, Jesu was named after the last song on the final Godflesh studio album, "Hymns." Broadrick's work under the Jesu moniker is characterized by its experimental fusion of heavy metal, shoegaze, ambient, and post-rock elements, creating a haunting and melancholic sound distinct from the guttural aggressiveness of Godflesh.
With albums like the self-titled "jesu" and "Conqueror," Jesu earned critical acclaim for its emotive textures and introspective atmosphere. Releases such as "Ascension," "Terminus," and the "Christmas EP" have cemented Jesu's reputation for exploring the depths of human emotion through dense sonic layers and introspective lyrics. Broadrick, both as a producer and musician, continues to push the boundaries of genre with Jesu, offering listeners a unique and immersive listening experience, as evidenced by the expansive and poignant soundscapes on Jesu's recent work, including "Toni (Jesu Interpolation)" and "pity / piety." Jesu's experimentation and innovation have made it a revered project within the realms of experimental and post-metal music.
