The Presidents of the United States of America, often abbreviated as PUSA, is an alternative rock band that formed in Seattle, Washington in 1993. The band's original lineup included vocalist and basitarist Chris Ballew, guitarist and guitbassist Dave Dederer, and drummer Jason Finn. The band gained fame for their quirky, catchy tunes, and minimalistic approach to instruments, with Ballew and Dederer playing custom-made two-string and three-string guitars (dubbed "basitar" and "guitbass" respectively) which contributed to the distinctive sound that flavored their hit singles.
The band's self-titled debut album exploded onto the music scene in 1995, featuring singles like "Lump," "Peaches," and "Kitty," which became emblematic of the group's humorous and upbeat style. The album's success catapulted them to mainstream recognition and they received Grammy nominations, reinforcing their place in the alternative rock landscape of the '90s. Over the years, PUSA released several albums, maintaining their playful energy even as band members changed, with Andrew McKeag eventually replacing Dederer. Albums like "II," "Pure Frosting," and "Love Everybody" sustained their popularity among dedicated fans. Although having gone through periods of hiatus, the band's final studio album, "Kudos to You!" released in 2014, serves as a testament to their enduring appeal and the spirited fun they infused in the alternative rock genre. The Presidents of the United States of America are celebrated for their idiosyncratic musical style and their ability to create an enduring legacy with wit and rock and roll gusto.
