Frankie Goes to Hollywood (FGTH) was an English band formed in Liverpool in 1980. Fronted by vocalist Holly Johnson, the band also included Paul Rutherford, Peter Gill, Mark O'Toole, and Brian Nash. They burst onto the scene with a blend of dance-pop and new wave music that became huge in the mid-1980s. Their provocative image and marketing campaigns stoked widespread public interest and allowed their debut single "Relax" to conquer the charts, despite—or perhaps because of—controversy and a subsequent BBC ban.
The group's first album, "Welcome to the Pleasuredome," released in 1984, spawned several hits including the titular track, "Two Tribes," and their haunting ballad "The Power of Love," which showcased the band's versatility and cemented their status as pop icons. The follow-up album, "Liverpool," presented a harder edge and rock influence, though it didn't reach the stratospheric success of its predecessor. After internal tensions and diminishing chart positions, the band split in the late 80s. Despite a relatively brief period of activity, FGTH's legacy endures, characterized by their bold sound, elaborate music videos, and frank exploration of sexuality and politics through music. "Bang! (Here Comes a Supernova)" is generally associated with their "Bang!" compilation album, which included previously released tracks, and "The Power of Love (Singlette)" was a reissue of their famous ballad, ensuring their timeless anthems continue to be celebrated by new generations of fans.
