Fountains of Wayne was an American power pop band that rose to prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Formed in 1995 in New York, the band was named after a lawn ornament store in Wayne, New Jersey. The group's key members included bassist Adam Schlesinger and vocalist/guitarist Chris Collingwood, who provided the backbone of the band's songwriting and production. Their music was characterized by witty lyrics, catchy melodies, and a blend of rock with pop sensibilities that garnered them critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase.
The band's self-titled debut album, "Fountains of Wayne," released in 1996, introduced their unique brand of guitar-driven pop, followed by "Utopia Parkway" in 1999 which continued to build their reputation for deft, narrative songwriting. However, it was their third album, "Welcome Interstate Managers" released in 2003, that served as their breakout project, propelled by the infectious single "Stacy's Mom," which became a massive hit. The band subsequently released "Out-Of-State Plates," a two-disc compilation of B-sides and rarities in 2005, followed by "Traffic And Weather" in 2007, and "Sky Full of Holes" in 2011, which would become their final studio album. Throughout their career, Fountains of Wayne's music highlighted the mundanities and quirks of suburban life, infusing it with clever humor and ear-catching hooks, leaving a lasting impact on the alternative and power pop scenes.
