Jaufre Rudel
Jaufré Rudel (also spelled Jaufre Rudel) was a medieval Occitan troubadour, traditionally dated to the 12th century and associated with the region of Blaye (in what’s now southwestern France). He’s best known for the poetic theme of *amor de lonh*—“love from afar”—a concept that became central to his legend and has kept his name alive far beyond the surviving details of his life.
Only a small number of his songs (with some melodies) survive, and much of what people “know” about him comes from later medieval biographies and anecdotes rather than firm historical records. Even so, his work remains a touchstone of troubadour lyric, frequently studied, translated, and recorded in modern performances of early music.
