Giuseppe Sammartini was an Italian composer and oboist who lived from 1695 to 1750. Born in Milan, he spent most of his professional life in London, where he was known as an incredibly skilled oboist. Sammartini worked for Frederick, Prince of Wales, as a music teacher for the royal family from 1736 until his death. He composed a lot of chamber music, including sonatas for flute and violin, as well as concertos. His most famous piece is probably the Concerto in F for recorder.
Sammartini was praised as one of the greatest oboists of his time, with a tone said to resemble the human voice. While he was well-known for his chamber music during his lifetime, many of his concertos became popular after his death. He helped shape the English oboe school and was an influential figure in the transition between the Baroque and Classical periods in music.
