Tito Puente & His Orchestra was the big-band Latin jazz and salsa outfit led by Tito Puente (1923–2000), the legendary New York–born bandleader, composer, and multi-instrumentalist best known for his dazzling work on timbales and vibraphone. Often hailed as “El Rey del Timbal,” Puente became one of the defining figures of Afro-Cuban jazz and mambo-era dance music, bringing high-energy percussion and tight horn arrangements to stages and ballrooms for decades.
Across a long career, Puente and his orchestra recorded extensively and helped popularize Latin music in the U.S., with classic performances that blended Cuban and Puerto Rican rhythms with the drive and sophistication of American big-band jazz. Their sound—punchy brass, swinging rhythm section, and Puente’s unmistakable percussion—made the orchestra a cornerstone of mid-century mambo and a lasting influence on salsa and Latin jazz musicians who followed.
