Scratch Acid was a gnarly noise rock band that erupted out of Austin, Texas, in the early 1980s. Known for their raw, unhinged sound and frontman David Yow’s famously chaotic stage antics, the group—rounded out by bassist David Wm. Sims, guitarist Brett Bradford, and drummer Rey Washam—became cult heroes for their abrasive, sludgy take on punk. Their self-titled 1984 EP and 1986’s *Berserker* EP (both remastered later for new generations) captured their signature blend of distortion, dark humor, and Yow’s primal howls. Though they split in 1987, their influence rippled through the ’90s alternative scene, with members later forming The Jesus Lizard. Reunions in the 2010s and compilations like *The Greatest Gift* kept their legacy alive, proving their music was as delightfully unhinged decades later as it was in their beer-soaked heyday.
