Dando Shaft is an English folk band originally formed in Coventry in 1968, embodying the innovative spirit of the British folk revival. Named after a character in a novel, the group was known for their distinctive blend of progressive folk music characterized by intricate acoustic guitar work, complex time signatures, and the use of traditional folk instruments such as the mandolin, dulcimer, and fiddle. The band's members included Martin Jenkins on mandocello, mandolin, and violin, Kevin Dempsey on guitar and vocals, Dave Cooper on guitar and vocals, Roger Bullen on bass, and Ted Kay on tabla and jew's harp.
Although Dando Shaft never achieved widespread commercial success, they gained a dedicated cult following and were influential within the folk scene. Their self-titled album "Dando Shaft" and the follow-up record "Lantaloon" showcased their skill in crafting melodic tunes that were at once both pastoral and experimental. After disbanding in the early '70s, the group experienced a resurgence of sorts with the release of "An Evening With Dando Shaft"—a live recording that captured the essence of their dynamic performance style. Their most recent offering, "Shadow Across the Moon (Live at Bergamo, Italy 1989)", serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of their live shows, which continued to enchant audiences with their virtuosic musicianship and evocative songwriting well into their reunion years.
