Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus, born Steven Ellison on October 7, 1983, is an American music producer, DJ, filmmaker, and musician who has crafted a distinct lane in the experimental beats and electronic music scene. Hailing from Los Angeles, California, Flying Lotus is also the grand-nephew of the late jazz pianist Alice Coltrane, wife of saxophonist John Coltrane, and his music often reflects a blend of jazz, electronic, hip-hop, and experimental sounds. He emerged in the mid-2000s with a series of albums and tracks that earned him a reputation for innovation and genre-blurring compositions.

A seminal figure in the L.A. beat scene and the wider electronic music community, Flying Lotus founded the independent record label Brainfeeder in 2008, which has become a hub for artists who push the boundaries of contemporary music. His work is marked by a refusal to settle into any single category, often weaving together a tapestry of beats that reflect his futuristic vision. Notable albums from his discography include "Los Angeles" (2008), "Cosmogramma" (2010), and "You're Dead!" (2014), each contributing to his reputation as a pioneer in the field. Flying Lotus's music has scored various visual media projects, expanding his influence, as heard in the original soundtrack for the anime series "Yasuke" and his contributions to the magical soundtrack for "Flying Lotus Presents: Music From The Hit Game Show Ozzy's Dungeon - Taken From V/H/S/99." Eminently respected and constantly evolving, his recent collaborations with artists like Conway the Machine and Black Thought demonstrate his ongoing relevance and ability to connect with the vanguard of contemporary hip-hop.
