Federigo Fiorillo

Federigo Fiorillo was a German-born composer and violinist from the Classical period, best known for his virtuosic works for strings, particularly his 36 Caprices for solo violin (Op. 3), which have remained an important part of violin and viola pedagogy. Born in 1755, Fiorillo had a career that took him through various European cities, including stints in Germany, England, and France, where he performed and published music. He was recognized for his technical skill on the violin and later the viola, and his compositions reflect the graceful, expressive style typical of the late 18th century.

Although not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, Fiorillo’s caprices are still studied by string players for their technical challenges and musical elegance. His chamber works, such as the Six Quatuors Concertants for flute, violin, viola, and cello, also show his flair for melodic writing and rich ensemble textures. Fiorillo passed away in 1823, but his contributions to string solo literature continue to influence classical musicians around the world.
