Courtney Pine is a British jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer who became one of the key figures in modern U.K. jazz from the 1980s onward. Known primarily for his work on tenor sax (and also soprano sax and bass clarinet), he’s built a reputation for blending straight-ahead jazz chops with contemporary influences—often drawing on Caribbean roots, soul, hip-hop, and electronic textures without losing the swing and storytelling at the heart of the music.
Across a long-running career he’s released a series of well-regarded albums and collaborations, and he’s frequently highlighted as an artist who helped bring wider attention to Britain’s jazz scene. Whether he’s working in more traditional settings or pushing into new grooves and production styles, Pine’s sound tends to be bold, melodic, and rhythm-forward—music that feels as comfortable in a club as it does on a festival stage.
