The English Concert

The English Concert is widely hailed as one of the finest chamber orchestras specializing in historically informed performance of Baroque and early Classical music. Founded in 1972 by harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock, the group has become synonymous with exquisite interpretations of 17th- and 18th-century repertoire, using period instruments to bring out the authentic sound of the time. Under Pinnock's direction until 2003, and subsequently under the leadership of Andrew Manze and current director Harry Bicket, The English Concert has carved out a niche for its dynamic performances and scholarly yet accessible approach to baroque masterworks.

Their discography, rich with the works of Handel, Vivaldi, and other Baroque giants, reflects The English Concert's status within the world of classical music. Their recordings such as "Handel: Messiah," featuring the rousing "Hallelujah" chorus, and "Handel: Serse," with its beloved "Ombra mai fu," showcase the orchestra's commitment to bringing these compositions to life with both technical precision and emotional depth. Their live performances are equally celebrated, including projects like "Purcell, Locke, Blow & Gibbons (Wigmore Hall Live)," which capture the spontaneity and energy of The English Concert's concerts. With a reputation for meticulous musicianship and collaboration with prominent soloists, The English Concert continues to enchant audiences and affirm the timeless allure of Baroque music.
