Girlschool are a British heavy metal band that formed in London in 1978 and became one of the standout acts of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal era. Known for their hard-driving, no-frills sound and road-tested energy, they broke through around the turn of the ’80s and quickly built a reputation as a formidable live band in a scene dominated by louder-than-life guitar riffing.
They’re also famously linked with Motörhead, teaming up for the “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” collaboration under the name Headgirl, and they’ve kept going through decades of lineup changes and new releases. While the band has continued as a long-running touring and recording act, a major chapter in their story is the loss of original guitarist Kelly Johnson in 2007.
