Friction

Friction is a trailblazing Japanese rock band formed in 1978 by Reck, following his return from New York City where he played with the seminal no wave bands Teenage Jesus and the Jerks and James Chance and the Contortions. Often cited as a key figure in the evolution of underground and punk music in Japan, Friction was established after Reck's inspired decision to create a band that would blend the raw energy of his New York experiences with the unique sensibilities of the Tokyo music scene. Although the band's initial lifespan was short-lived, disbanding in 1982, their influence continued to resonate, leading to subsequent reunions and releases well into the modern era.

Friction's sound is a complex fusion of punk ferocity, avant-garde experimentalism, and the frenetic edge of no wave, all of which are encapsulated in their album "Friction". Across multiple line-up changes, reunions, and periods of activity, the band's discography, like the enigmatic "Primitive Touch" and the archival treasure trove "Bootleg Recordings 1979-1987", showcase their restless innovation and refusal to adhere to any single genre or style. Live albums such as "ライヴ PASS TOUR '80" and "ライヴ・イン・ローマ" capture the band's raucous energy on stage, solidifying their reputation not just as studio artists but as dynamic live performers. The title "軋轢" translates to "friction" or "discord," paralleling the band's penchant for musical disruption and their own name.
