Nils Kugelmann

Nils Kugelmann is a German jazz bassist and composer born in Munich in 1996 who has quickly established himself as a rising star in contemporary jazz. Starting his musical journey on recorder, piano, and clarinet before settling on the double bass, he displayed early compositional talent by writing pieces for clarinet, big band, orchestra, and musicals at a young age. After studying double bass at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, he gained recognition both as a bandleader and sideman, collaborating with notable artists such as Benny Golson and Johannes Enders. Kugelmann’s debut album *Stormy Beauty* (2023) was critically acclaimed, earning a nomination for the German Record Critics' Award and positioning him prominently on the European jazz charts. Known for liberating the double bass from its traditional role, his music combines jazz, classical, rock, and folk influences with vibrant grooves and cinematic melodies that captivate audiences .

Now based in Berlin, Nils leads a trio with pianist Luca Zambito and drummer Sebastian Wolfgruber known for their infectious, modern jazz sound. His follow-up album *Life Score* (2025) continues to showcase his compelling compositions and dynamic playing, helping him earn awards including the BMW Young Artist Jazz Award and the European Young Artist Award. Kugelmann’s work with various ensembles, including the Shuteen Erdenebaatar Quartet, further cements his reputation for innovation and emotional depth in jazz.
