The Meat Puppets are an influential American rock band formed in January 1980, in Phoenix, Arizona. Initially rooted in punk rock, their music soon embraced a more eclectic mix of genres, including punk, hardcore, country, and psychedelic rock, forging what would later be called "alternative rock". The band is best known for their loose and free-wheeling style, which became a harbinger for the grunge movement of the early '90s. The core of the band consists of brothers Curt Kirkwood (guitar/vocals) and Cris Kirkwood (bass guitar), along with Derrick Bostrom (drums), who together formed the original trio that would become synonymous with the Meat Puppets' innovative sound.
Throughout the band's extensive career, which has seen them release over a dozen albums and experience various hiatuses and lineup changes, the Meat Puppets have never ceased to evolve or impact the rock music landscape. Their early releases, such as "In A Car" and the critically acclaimed "II", laid down the foundation of their psychedelic punk aesthetic, while later work incorporated more melody and accessibility. Notable for their appearance on Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged" session in 1993, where they performed three of their songs with Kurt Cobain, the Meat Puppets reached a broader audience and etched their name into rock history. Continuing to create, albums such as "Rat Farm" (2013) and "Dusty Notes" (2019) see the band exploring fresh sonic territories while maintaining the unorthodox spirit that has defined them for over four decades. Their capability to shift shapes within the rock genre while maintaining a distinct sound has cemented the Meat Puppets as one of the most enduring and respected bands in American alternative music.
