Ferenc Farkas

Ferenc Farkas was a prominent Hungarian composer born on December 15, 1905, in Nagykanizsa, and he passed away on October 10, 2000, in Budapest. His vast compositional oeuvre, which spans over a remarkable seven decades, reflects his mastery in adapting classical structures with Hungarian folk music traditions. A testament to his enduring and fervent creativity are his eclectic works ranging from operas and ballets to chamber music and concertos.

Farkas was educated at the Music Academy in Budapest under the guidance of Leó Weiner and Albert Siklós, after which he further honed his craft in Rome and Paris, mentored by none other than Ottorino Respighi and the legendary pedagogue Nadia Boulanger. This diverse tutelage contributed to Farkas’ distinctively rich harmonic language and his knack for writing expressive melodies, as can be heard throughout his instrumental compositions. Moreover, his 'Piano Works, Vol. 1' and many volumes of chamber and orchestral music stand as testament to Farkas' versatility and fluency in various classical forms. His legacy endures, as both an influential composer in 20th-century Hungarian music and as a revered teacher who left his mark on subsequent generations of musicians.
