Bob Mintzer is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, arranger, and bandleader known for his big-band writing and powerhouse tenor playing. He first gained wide attention in the 1980s leading the Bob Mintzer Big Band and has since become a go-to name in contemporary jazz for tight, energetic charts that balance groove, sophistication, and plenty of room for soloists to stretch.
He’s also spent years at the center of major ensembles—most notably as a longtime member of the Yellowjackets, and as a key figure with the WDR Big Band in Germany, where he served as chief conductor and helped shape the band’s modern sound through ambitious programming and original arrangements. Across his career, Mintzer’s work has bridged straight-ahead jazz, funk, and fusion, earning him a reputation as both a top-tier performer and one of the most in-demand writers in jazz.
