Friedrich Witt was a German composer and cellist who lived from 1770 to 1836. He's best known for his symphonies and chamber music, particularly works featuring wind instruments. Witt spent much of his career in Würzburg, where he served as Kapellmeister at the court.
One of Witt's claims to fame is that his Symphony in C major was long mistakenly attributed to Beethoven. Known as the "Jena" Symphony, it was discovered in 1909 and initially thought to be an early work by Beethoven before scholars correctly identified Witt as the composer. This mix-up speaks to the quality of Witt's compositions, which were well-regarded in his time but largely forgotten until relatively recently.
