The Fat Boys were a pioneering and influential American hip hop trio that rose to fame during the early 1980s. Originally composed of Mark "Prince Markie Dee" Morales, Damon "Kool Rock-Ski" Wimbley, and Darren "Buff Love" Robinson, the group became known for their humorous, self-deprecating lyrics and larger-than-life personalities that broke through the burgeoning rap scene's stereotypes. Their self-titled debut album "Fat Boys" hit the shelves in 1984 and became an immediate success, leveraging on their beatboxing skills and entertaining performances.
Following their auspicious start, The Fat Boys sustained their presence in the spotlight with a series of albums that kept fans engaged. They released "The Fat Boys Are Back" in 1985, "Big & Beautiful" in 1986, the platinum-selling "Crushin'" in 1987—which featured a hit collaboration with The Beach Boys on "Wipeout"—and "Coming Back Hard Again" in 1988. While the group's momentum waned in the '90s, their legacy within the hip-hop community remains significant. They were recognized for making the genre more accessible and mainstream. Sadly, the group's lively dynamic was cut short by the untimely death of Buff Love in 1995, and more recently, Prince Markie Dee in 2021, leaving Kool Rock-Ski to carry on their hefty legacy.
