Felt

Felt was a British indie pop band founded in 1979 by Lawrence Hayward (usually known simply as "Lawrence"), who was the frontman and primary songwriter of the group. Their music was characterized by a blend of jangling guitars, literary influences, and Lawrence's distinct vocal delivery. Despite never achieving significant commercial success, Felt has long been revered within indie music circles for their unique sound, wistful lyrics, and Lawrence's idiosyncratic vision. Over the course of the 1980s, the band released ten albums and ten singles, fulfilling Lawrence's initial manifesto of releasing ten albums in ten years before disbanding.

Felt's lineup saw various changes throughout their years of activity, with Lawrence being the only constant member. The band's sound evolved from the post-punk and new wave influences of their early work to a more polished, yet always esoteric, pop sound later on. Albums such as "Forever Breathes the Lonely Word" and "Poem of the River" showcased the band's creative peak with keyboardist Martin Duffy (later of Primal Scream) contributing significantly to their atmospheric soundscapes. Collaborations with Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie, particularly on the album "Ignite the Seven Cannons", brought a dream-like quality to their music. Although Felt disbanded in 1989 with the release of "Me and a Monkey on the Moon", their music has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years with remastered editions of their classic albums, allowing a new generation of listeners to discover their rich discography. Felt remains a cult favorite, with their influence acknowledged by countless indie and alternative bands who've followed in their footsteps.
