**King Ultramega** is a supergroup featuring members of iconic rock and metal bands such as Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Anthrax, and Metal Allegiance, formed to honor the legacy of Chris Cornell. The project was started by bassist and producer Mark Menghi in 2020 during the pandemic, initially as a cover of Soundgarden's “Rusty Cage.” The collective includes notable musicians like William DuVall (Alice in Chains), Bill Kelliher (Mastodon), Charlie Benante (Anthrax), and guest artists such as Richie Kotzen and Joe Satriani on later releases. King Ultramega’s music pays tribute to Cornell’s powerful voice and songwriting by covering his classics, with proceeds supporting MusiCares, a nonprofit that provides mental health and addiction recovery services to the music community.
The group’s releases, including their renditions of “Rusty Cage,” “Say Hello 2 Heaven,” and “Be Yourself,” feature rotating collaborations that bring a fresh but respectful take to Cornell’s work, integrating talents across the rock and metal scenes. This project not only celebrates the influence of Chris Cornell and his bands like Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog but also raises awareness and funds for causes important to the artist and the wider music community.
