Kyuss was a seminal stoner rock band that emerged from Palm Desert, California, in the late 1980s. Formed by vocalist John Garcia, guitarist Josh Homme, bassist Nick Oliveri and drummer Brant Bjork, the band's sound was characterized by down-tuned and fuzz-laden guitars, heavy basslines, and a dynamic mix of hard rock, psychedelic rock, and blues influences. Kyuss released their debut album "Wretch" in 1991, which, despite poor production values, laid the groundwork for their distinct style and garnered them a dedicated underground following.
The band's following two albums, "Blues for the Red Sun" (1992) and "Welcome to Sky Valley" (1994), are often cited as cornerstones of the stoner rock genre. Under the direction of producer Chris Goss, these records propelled Kyuss to new heights, with their innovative sound that was both weighty and spatial, evading the era's grunge movement and carving out a unique desert-rock niche. By the time "Green Machine" hit the airwaves as a single, Kyuss had already made a significant impact on the rock music scene. Their final studio album, "...And the Circus Leaves Town" (1995), displayed the band's continuous evolution but unfortunately came just before their breakup in 1996. Kyuss' influence has since endured, not the least through Josh Homme's later success with Queens of the Stone Age, and the band's music still stands as a defining statement of the stoner rock genre.
