Methyl Ethel

Methyl Ethel is an Australian art rock band originating from Perth, Western Australia. The group was formed in 2013 by Jake Webb, who initially embarked on the project as a personal recording endeavor but eventually evolved into a fully-fledged band. Webb, who stands as the principal songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist, is known for blending enigmatic lyrics with a myriad of influences ranging from dream pop to psychedelic rock. The band's name, Methyl Ethel, is a reference to the nickname of a character from the British children's educational program "Look and Read," yet it also playfully alludes to the organic compound methyl ethyl ketone, symbolising Webb's interest in the inherent dichotomy between the organic and the synthetic in music.

The band quickly caught the attention of music lovers and critics alike with their ethereal sound and compelling compositions, marked by the release of albums such as "Oh Inhuman Spectacle" (2015), "Everything Is Forgotten" (2017), and "Triage" (2019). Methyl Ethel's work is characterized by its expansive and intricate melodies, often punctuated with lush synths and infectious guitar hooks. They broke further ground with the hit single "Ubu" which peaked at number 4 on the Triple J Hottest 100 of 2017. With their more recent releases like "Are You Haunted?" and "Neon Cheap," they continue to push the boundaries of their sonic palette, cementing their place in the alternative music scene as purveyors of rich, textural soundscapes.
