Sweet, also known as The Sweet, is a British glam rock band that rose to worldwide fame in the 1970s with their captivating blend of rock and pop, characterized by harmonious vocals, catchy hooks, and a distinctly glittery stage presence. Formed in London in 1968, the original lineup consisted of lead vocalist Brian Connolly, bassist Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott, and drummer Mick Tucker. The band initially struggled to find commercial success but their fortune changed when they teamed up with songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, who penned a series of hits for them including "Little Willy," "Wig-Wam Bam," "Block Buster!" and "Ballroom Blitz," which have since become timeless anthems of the era.
Throughout the mid to late 1970s, Sweet enjoyed a prolific run of chart success, releasing a string of memorable albums such as "Desolation Boulevard" (1974) and "Give Us a Wink" (1976). They are also known for their influential track "Fox on the Run," which captured the band's move towards a harder rock sound, one that they composed themselves, demonstrating their musical versatility beyond their glam rock roots. Despite internal conflicts, lineup changes, and the passing of Connolly in 1997 and Tucker in 2002, Sweet has persevered, continuing to create music and tour with Andy Scott at the helm. The band's enduring appeal is evident in their recent remastered releases and ongoing dedication to their craft, which keeps the quintessential Sweet sound alive for both nostalgic fans and new audiences discovering their rich discography.
