Ras G (Gregory Shorter Jr.) was a Los Angeles–based producer and beatmaker closely associated with the city’s left-field instrumental scene. A key figure in the Low End Theory orbit and a co-founder of the Brainfeeder crew, he became known for woozy, bass-heavy beat tapes that pull from hip-hop, funk, and a deep love of cosmic/spiritual jazz and Afrofuturist ideas.
Across projects released under names like Ras G & the Afrikan Space Program, his music leans psychedelic and otherworldly—dusty drums, warped synths, and a collage-like approach that feels both raw and expansive. Ras G passed away in 2018, but his influence remains strongly felt in the LA beat community and beyond.
