Martin Jopp is a German violinist who has carved out an impressive niche in the world of baroque and early music, both as a performer and a director. He began violin lessons at age seven in Tübingen and later studied modern violin in Stuttgart before specializing in baroque violin at the Musikhochschule in Würzburg under Prof. Gottfried von der Goltz. Since 2004, Jopp has served as concertmaster of Barucco, and since 2000, he’s been a member of the L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra under Michi Gaigg; he also regularly collaborates with the Hofkapelle Stuttgart and leads the Stuttgart Baroque Orchestra ‘il Gusto Barocco’ as concertmaster since 2012.
In addition to his orchestral roles, Jopp is an active chamber musician, playing in ensembles like Echo du Danube and L’Arcadia, and he was a founding member of the Quadriga Consort. His discography is broad and includes chamber music and concertos by composers such as Bach, Telemann, Fasch, Hertel, Molter, Finger, and Krieger, as well as recent releases like Weigl’s *6 Trios for Oboe, Violin & Cello* (2024), Abel’s *The Late Symphonies*, and Telemann’s *Allegro – Adagio (from Concerto in D major)*. While Jopp’s playing is deeply rooted in historical performance practice—he was already experimenting with baroque techniques and gut strings in school—he balances this with a busy recording and concert schedule that keeps him at the forefront of the early music scene.
