Babes In Toyland

Babes in Toyland is an influential American punk rock band that crashed onto the music scene in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1987. Founded by singer and guitarist Kat Bjelland, along with drummer Lori Barbero and bassist Michelle Leon (who was later replaced by Maureen Herman), the band became emblematic of the riot grrrl movement, even though they predated and maintained a distinct identity from it. Babes in Toyland carved out a niche with their ferocious sound, raw energy, and Bjelland's distinctive, often snarling vocals which helped them stand out in the male-dominated rock sphere.

The band's debut studio album, "Spanking Machine" (1990), produced by Jack Endino, established their presence with its aggressive punk and noise rock sound, earning them critical acclaim and a dedicated following. They continued to build on their success with the EP "To Mother" (1991), which further honed the trio's confrontational style. "Fontanelle," their sophomore album released in 1992, solidified their standing in the alternative rock explosion of the early '90s, featuring tracks like "Bruise Violet" that resonated with an expanding audience. Subsequent releases included "Painkillers" (1993), a collection of live tracks and unreleased material, "Nemesisters" (1995), which showcased a broader diversity of musical experimentation, and more recently, the live album "Minneapolism" (Live) (2021), capturing the raw live performance that exemplified the band's energy. The well-received compilation "We Are Family" (2021) was another addition to their catalog, serving as a testament to their enduring impact on rock music. Babes in Toyland's legacy is rooted in their powerful, uncompromising music that paved the way for future generations of female musicians in the punk and alternative rock genres.
